Welikada prison clashes resolved, 52 female inmates transferred

Tuesday, 21 August 2018 - 10:12

The tense situation that erupted up between a group of female inmates and staff at Welikada Prison, was fully resolved last night.
The Prison Department said that action was taken to have the 52 female inmates transferred to other prisons
The clash was instigated as a group of female inmates made their way on to the roof of a prison building and launched another protest.
The first such incident took place less than a week ago, on 13th of this month.
That protest was launched to voice their opposition for delays in processing court cases and the demand for improved facilities at the prison.
That protest lasted two days and was called off, after discussions held with officials from the Ministry of Justice and Prisons Reforms.
However,   Prisons Department Media spokesperson, Thushara Upuldeniya said that in spite of action being taken to provide solutions to their demands, a group of female inmates had staged an agitation and assaulted the prison officials.
As a result of the clash, eight prison officials and three female inmates were injured and admitted to the Prison Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Organization for Safeguarding the Rights of Prisoners, lodged a complaint with Borella police yesterday charging that the prison officials had assaulted the female inmates.
