The Attorney General’s Department states that it will take necessary legal action against MP Vijayakala Maheswaran in accordance with police investigations that were conducted in connection to the controversial pro-LTTE statement made by the MP.

A senior officer from the department told us that they are currently studying the reports from the police investigation.

The Attorney General has informed the speaker that it is up to the court to decide whether the MP has violated the constitution.

Under the 6th amendment of the constitution passed in 1983, if an MP violates his or her pledge to stand against separation, they would then lose the seat.

The example was presented that A. Amirthalingam, who was the then Opposition Leader, lost his parliament seat under this law.
