President Maithripala Sirisena has taken over the implementation of the extradition law under which criminals could be exchanged among countries.

The power of this law will be transferred from the Internal Affairs Ministry to the President’s purview under an extraordinary gazette No.2085/8, which was issued yesterday.

Views were expressed to bring back former Central Bank Governor, Arjuna Mahendran and former ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga under the extradition law.

Both are accused of financial frauds.

However, if a suspect is arrested while hiding overseas on a political matter, he could not be extradited as such individuals are protected by the Charter of International Civil and Political Rights.
