Case filed in Dubai to bring Udayanga Weerathunga back

Police stated that the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division, the Criminal Investigation Division, Attorney General’s Department and the Foreign Affairs Ministry have jointly launched a special programme to bring the former ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weerathunga, back to the country.

Police Media Spokesperson, SP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that the reports published on the internet that the CID has suspended its measures to bring Udayanga Weerathunga to the country, are false.

Additionally, the Attorney General’s Department informed courts that a case has been filed in Dubai to bring Udayanga Weerathunga to the country following a request made by the Government of Sri Lanka.  

The Attorney General’s Department further informed courts that the case is scheduled to be taken up for hearing again on the 10th of next month.

The Attorney General’s Department also informed courts that the proceedings of the hearing in Dubai have not been received as yet.

Colombo Chief Magistrate, Lanka Jayarathna ordered the CID to inform courts about the progress made in bringing Udayanga Weerathunga to the country when the case is again taken up for hearing again on the 26th of October.

The Magistrate Ordered 19 banks and 46 financial institutions to produce the details of the accounts of Udayanga Weerathunga, his wife, daughter, mother, sister and brother-in-law.

The Magistrate has also ordered the Operations Director of Colombo Stock Exchange’s Central Depository System to produce the relevant information pertaining to the said individuals.
