The protest demonstration conducted by the area residents near the Minneriya Railway Station against the arrest of two fishermen who are accused of allegedly assaulting wildlife officials has ended.

The protest was held for three hours and because of that traffic on the Habarana - Minneriya road was affected.

The protestors agreed to end the demonstration after the police said that a discussion with the wildlife authorities would be arranged.

The fishermen had assaulted the wildlife officials inside the Minneriya National Park when they were apprehended for fishing inside the park.

Three wildlife officials sustained injuries in the attack and they were admitted to Habarana Hospital for treatment.

Later, police arrested two fishermen and they were remanded until 11th of next month by the Bakamuna Magistrate.

The curator of the park, Bathiya Madugalle decided to close the National Park for visitors today after staff did not report to work citing safety fears.
