Wildlife officers have launched trade union action effective from this morning demanding the arrest of the suspects who assaulted their fellow officers.

The fishermen in the area surrounded the wildlife office in Minneriya after wildlife officers arrested a fisherman last Sunday for fishing inside the park illegally.

Police arrested two fishermen for allegedly assaulting the wildlife officers and produced before Bakamuna Magistrate.

They were remanded until 11th of next month.

However, Sri Lanka wildlife Field Assistants’ Union secretary Sujeewa Herath says the main suspect is still at large.

The Wildlife Assistant Director in charge of Polonnaruwa, W. M. D. J. Wickramasinghe told our news team that the strikers had not given a prior notice about the ongoing strike.

Meanwhile, the safari jeep operators also held a demonstration this morning demanding that the national park is opened.
