Doctors and staff avoid reporting to work at Galaha Hospital

Health Minister, Rajitha Senarathna has instructed the Health Services Director General, Dr. Anil Jasinghe to launch an investigation into the incident that took place at Galaha hospital in Kandy yesterday.
He had requested that a report is submitted with the findings.
The doctors, nurses and hospital staff at Galaha hospital did not report for duty today as a result of yesterday’s incident.
A tense situation erupted at the hospital after a one and a half-year-old boy died reportedly due to negligence on the part of the doctors.
Later, relatives and area residents staged a protest near the hospital and they also damaged the hospital property.
Police used tear gas to disperse the agitated crowd.
Meanwhile, the doctor in charge of the hospital was escorted out of the premised by police disguised in a police uniform.
Heightened security has been assigned at the hospital and the town.
The postmortem on the toddler's remains is scheduled to be held today.
