Ven. Gnanasara Thera taken to prison

Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera was transferred to Welikada prison today after undergoing a surgical procedure at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital.
Ven. Gnanasara Thera was sentenced to 6 years rigorous imprisonment after he was found guilty of contempt of court recently.
At the time the sentence was announced the Thera had admitted to the hospital to have a kidney stone surgically removed.
Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal is to decide tomorrow whether the Thera is permitted to file an appeal against the sentence at the Supreme Court.
At the same time, the Minister of Buddha Sasana, Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said that a presidential pardon might be considered after the Court of Appeal decision is announced tomorrow.
Meanwhile, when journalists enquired from joint cabinet spokesperson Minister Rajitha Senarathna whether a presidential pardon could be granted to Ven. Gnanasara Thera, the Minister said that such a request could be considered only after the monk serves the sentence for a period of time.
