The carcasses of seven wild elephants that were found buried in the marshy-lands of Thummodara National Park in Polonnaruwa were retrieved this morning.

Wildlife officers were assisted by the Sri Lanka Army in this operation.

The Deputy Minister of Wildlife, Palitha Thevarapperuma was also present during the operation.

Meanwhile, environmentalists are suspicious about the cause of death of these wild elephants.

Post-mortems on the carcasses are to be performed at the site.

The Wildlife Director General, Chandana Suriyabandara told our news team that the incident will be reported to the Polonnaruwa Magistrate Court.
