No new chairs for Parliament says speaker

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya says that there is no intention to purchase new chairs for the parliament chamber.
In a statement, the speaker said that certain news reports to that effect were baseless.
The speaker is of the opinion that the necessary repairs if any, should be done at minimal cost, and no new chairs should be purchased at this moment.
At the same time, the speaker reiterated that he will not allow changing the historical parliament symbols for whatever reason.
However, he stated that attention has been drawn only to some refurbishments in the roof of the parliament building, sewage system as well as the washrooms.
A move to purchase some expensive chairs for the Western Provincial Council became the talk of the town in the past few days.
