Bailed out monks ordered to give a statement to police

Monday, 03 September 2018 - 19:31

The court ordered the four monks who were granted bail today to give statements to Fort Police without delay.
Madille Pangnaloka Thera, Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera, Iththekande Saddhathissa Thera and Magalkande Sudaththa Thera were released on Rs. 150,000 surety bail each today.
They are accused of causing damage to state property during a protest organized by disabled war heroes at Colombo in 2016.
The court ordered on August 31 to arrest them and produce before the court.
The lawyer appearing for the monks told the court that his clients were produced before the court through a motion because they would be unable to perform some customary religious rites if they are arrested.
Having considered the submissions, Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayarathna stated that bail could be granted to the monks as they are not charged under the public property Act.
Later, the case was fixed for December 7th.
