JO protest heads to Colombo in 6 parades; 5000 policeman deployed

Wednesday, 05 September 2018 - 13:52

The Joint Opposition has confirmed that its supporters are en route to Colombo in six separate parades from the North, North Central, Central, south and Western Provinces.

The protesters are scheduled to meet at an undisclosed location in the city between 12 noon and 2 pm.
MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage said that Viharamaha Devi Park and Campbell park have been reserved for the rally.

In addition, a meeting was held this morning between the Joint Opposition coalition leaders and former president Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuss the specifics of the rally.
Meanwhile, JO supporters heading into the city along the Kandy Colombo road, faced some inconveniences, due to a sinkhole near Nittambuwa town.

The JO charged that the sinkhole was intentionally created to obstruct the path to Colombo. However, the Nittambuwa police confirmed that the sinkhole had been dug out due to repair works on a burst water pump.
Meanwhile, an unknown group had assaulted JO supporters on Sunday while they were decorating the roadsides for the protest.

One of the victims was hospitalized following the attack and police are investigating the incident. Police media spokesman, SP, Ruwan Gunasekera said that over 5000 policemen have been deployed to ensure security in Colombo.
