The Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development says it is compelled to postpone transporting the garbage that has accumulated in Colombo, to the Putlam- Aruwakkaalu garbage collection centre and sanitary landfill.

However a senior spokesperson for the ministry noted that the initial plan was to transport garbage to the respective center from today.

he noted that due to a delay in construction activities, transportation of colombo garbage had to be postponed.

The contract for construction of the Puttlam Aruwakkalu garbage and solid waste sanitary landfill center is been carried out by a China Harbour Engineering group.

The contractual agreement was signed, on the 29th of December 2016.

The project costing 105 million US dollars is to be completed in November this year.

According to the project plan, garbage will be transported via the railway line that has been constructed from Colombo to Aruwakkaalu.

However, the construction of this railway line is to conclude in September next year.

Until then it has been decided that the garbage will be transported by roadways.
