President berates IGP;Tension in the cabinet over provincial council election

Government sources said that President Maithripala Sirisena had stated at the cabinet meeting held yesterday that the police department beginning from the IGP had to be reformed immediately.

Responding to a query by our news team a senior government minister said that the president had criticized the IGP’s line of action and stated that he and the prime minister had received most of the blame because of the IGP’s unbecoming behaviour.

The President said that the discipline and self-control of some personnel in the police had deteriorated and that this should be corrected forthwith.

The president had also said at the cabinet meeting that the statements that some had made to the effect that crimes had decreased could not be accepted.

Meanwhile, reports also say that a heated discussion had taken place between ministers at the cabinet meeting held yesterday regarding the provincial council election.

Expressing his views in this regard Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the committee appointed for studying the provincial council delimitation committee report and making recommendations had met recently and placed the responsibility of taking a decision regarding the election on the cabinet.

On this occasion Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva had said that the SLFP stand had been that the election should be held according to the electoral system.

The Minister had also said on this occasion that the SLFP had voted for the 19th constitutional amendment, on the basis of the consensus to hold the election under the electoral system.

Minister Faizer Mustafa too expressing his views said that holding the election again according to the old system was out.

Minister Mustafa said that the SLFP position was that the election should be held according to the electoral method.

After the expression of views by several persons regarding this, the President said that the discussion regarding the subject could not be held solely within the cabinet.

The President also said that soon all political parties should be called a speedy discussion held regarding the subject.

Reports say that a discussion is scheduled to be held with the participation of all political party leaders with the President at the chair.
