The MET department stated that the low-pressure zone in the Arabian Sea to the west of the island can be expected to intensify further in the next 48 hours.

Accordingly, the department noted that heavy showers exceeding 150 mm of intensity can be expected over many areas in the next few days as well.

Issuing a communiqué, the National Building Research Organization noted that if heavy rainfall prevails in the next 24 hours, landslides and embankment collapses can be expected in Kalutara district’s Walallawita, Bulathsinhala , Agalawaththa and Mathugama divisional secretariat divisions as well as Badulla district’s Haldummulla and Passara divisional secretariat divisions.

Meanwhile, the MET department this afternoon stated that sea areas off the coasts extending from Mannar to Hambantota through Colombo, Galle and Matara can be expected to be quite rough.

Accordingly, the Fisheries Department has urged fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea from the said areas.

Many provinces received heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours while the highest rainfall of 102.5 mm was reported from Vogan Estate in Kalutara.

Meanwhile, the Road Development Authority requested motorists to limit their speeds to a maximum of 60 kilometres per hour when using expressways.
