New constitutional assembly meets to discuss about new chief justice

The new constitutional assembly will meet at 12 noon today for the first time.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya told parliament that the Constitutional Assembly will discuss the appointment of a new chief justice during the meeting today.

The 10 members for the Constitutional Assembly have already been appointed and, the Prime Minister, the Opposition Leader and the Speaker are officially appointed to the assembly.

Meanwhile, Mahinda Samarasinghe has been appointed to represent the President while Chamal Rajapaksa will represent the Opposition Leader.

Minster, Thalatha Athukorala has been appointed the Prime Minister’s representative.

The minor political party representative is MP Bimal Rathnayake.

In addition, the civil society members appointed to the constitutional assembly are Dr Jayantha Dhanapala, Attorney-at-law, Ahamad Javed Yusuf and senior lecturer of Colombo University, Naganadan Selvakumaran.

The term of office of the Constitutional Assembly set up under the 19th Amendment is 3 years.
