The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has restricted importing consumer goods that are not essential in order to ease the pressure on the rupee.

Accordingly, the Central Bank has decided to restrict importing a list of goods including televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, perfumes and footwear.

The Central Bank has informed commercial banks and authorized financial institutions to prevent exchanging rupees to US dollars and other foreign currencies in order to import such products.

Economic experts have emphasized that the Central Bank’s decision will inconvenience small and medium scale import-oriented enterprises.

Experts are of the opinion that such a decision will result in a shortage of the said goods in future.
