President’s Media Unit refutes The Hindu report on Cabinet meeting

A communiqué issued by the President’s Media Unit quotes the President denying that he said in the Cabinet meeting that an Indian Intelligence Unit has attempted to assassinate him.

The communiqué was issued with regard to certain foreign media reports published today to that effect.

Meanwhile the Cabinet Secretary, Sumith Abeysinghe issued a communiqué with regard to some reports published by several national newspapers this morning.

These newspapers ran banner headlines that the Cabinet meeting was tensed over a cabinet paper presented by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to lease the East terminal of the Colombo Harbor to India.

The newspapers further reported that President Sirisena reproached Prime Minister Wickremesinghe over his Cabinet paper.

In this backdrop, Cabinet secretary Sumith Abeysinghe stated in his communiqué, the president in his capacity as the head of the Cabinet is concerned about such newspaper reports.

At the same time, the communiqué by the President’s Media Unit stated that the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Tharanjith Singh Sandu met President Maithripala Sirisena following the newspaper reports.

It further states that the discussions relevant to the issue took place in the Cabinet meeting were explained during this meeting.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Affairs Ministry in a communiqué refuted the media reports which referred to an attempt by some Intelligence Agencies to assassinate the President as they have no foundation.
