Police last night dispersed the protest the estate workers had launched demanding the increase of their minimum daily wage up to 1000 rupees.

The estate workers had staged the protest for nearly seven hours in front of the Presidential Secretariat blocking the Galle Face Road without undeterred even by the heavy rain.

While the protest had begun at about 10.30 last forenoon from the Lotus roundabout, it had been organized by a group including estate workers’ children gathered together through social media.

While the protesters proceeded towards the Presidential Secretariat at about 12.30 p.m. the police prevented their trek in the direction of the Presidential secretariat by using road blocks.
