Politicians of the plantation industry have warned the government on increasing the daily wage of estate workers to 1000 rupees.

Several protests were staged yesterday in the estate areas demanding the wage be increased to 1000 rupees.

The plantation owners association at a media briefing in Colombo noted that the daily wage can only be increased up to 600 rupees.

Currently the basic daily wage of estate workers is at 530 rupees.

The association further noted that even though planters had suggested that the total daily wage received which is at 805 rupees to be increased to 940 rupees, the workers had not agreed to this condition.

In addition it has been reported that a proposal was made to offer estate workers plucking additional 16 to 18 kilos of tea, 28 rupees per kilo.

A company expends 125 rupees per day to provide facilities for estate workers.

However, minister Palani Digambaran noted that the government will be persuaded to increase the minimum wage of estate workers to 1000 rupees.

State education state minister of the Nuwara Eliya and leader of the Up-Country People's Front, V. Radhakrishnan noted that the estate workers wage issue is a national problem and that he will reconsider supporting the government if a solution is not provided through this year’s budget.

He stated this attending a media briefing held in Nuwara Eliya yesterday.

Meanwhile the leader of the Tamil Progressive Alliance Minister Mano Ganeshan noted that the estate workers issue will be discussed with the prime minister next Monday.
