UPFA General Secretary, Mahinda Amaraweera has written to the speaker asking him to grant all the rights and privileges that are entitled to the new Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Meanwhile, a special meeting of the representatives from all political parties of parliament was held under the patronage of the speaker today.

During the meeting, representatives of the UNP, Ilangai Tamil Arasu Kachchi, the JVP, and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress were of the opinion that proroguing parliament has violated democratic rights so it should be convened soon.

However, ministers, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Dr Sarath Amunugama, and Dr Wijedasa Rajapaksa have pointed out that the appointment of the new prime minister and prorogue of parliament have been carried out constitutionally.

At this juncture, other parties have expressed their views in opposition to that of the ministers’.

Meanwhile, the NFF stated in a communiqué that the statements issued by the speaker could support the countries that attempt to influence the independence and sovereignty of this country.
