A group of UNP MPs led by Nalin Bandara handed over a letter to the Police Headquarters requesting police to provide them with ministerial protection same as in the past.

Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary General of Parliament, Neil Iddawela says that his staff is compelled to perform their duties according to the Gazette issued by the President.

He said that necessary instructions have not yet been received by him.

The Gazette issued on November 4 states that parliament should be convened on November 14.

The Sergeant of Arms, Narendra Fernando stated that he expects official notice on the inauguration of parliament within the next few days.

At the same time, parliament sources stated that the President has powers to ceremonially inaugurate parliament or inaugurate it without a ceremony.

In addition, the speaker’s office has organized a special political party leaders meeting to discuss the matter in the next few days.

Meanwhile, journalists continuously questioned Speaker Karu Jayasuriya with regard to the reconvening of parliament during a ceremony held in Colombo today.
