12 petitions have been filed with the Supreme Court today , against parliament being dissolved.

Our correspondent stated that all petitions are scheduled to be taken before a three judge panel, chaired by the Chief Justice Nalin Perera later today.

The UNP, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, Tamil National Alliance, Tamil Progressive Alliance, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and All Ceylon People’s Congress are among the parties to file petitions requesting that the Presidential decree to dissolve parliament be declared illegitimate.

Additionally, Election Commission member, Professor, Rathnajeevan Hoole, Attorneys-at-law from the Center for policy alternative, Anura Laksiri and Lal Wijenayake and two other individuals have also filed petitions against parliament being dissolved

President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the chairman of the election commission and the attorney general have been named as respondents.

The petitioners claim that under the 19th Amendment to the constitution the president has no authority to dissolve parliament.

The petitioners therefore have made a plea to the Supreme Court that a decree be issued declaring the Gazette under which parliament was dissolved, be made  null and void.

Further they have made a plea to issue a restraining order that would prevent a general election from taking place until the petitions are heard.
