Supreme Court adjourns the hearing of petitions with regard to the dissolution of parliament until tomorrow

The Supreme Court decided today to adjourn the hearing of the fundamental petitions with regard to the dissolution of parliament for tomorrow.

The petitions were taken before a three-judge panel comprising of the Chief Justice Nalin Perera, Justice Priyantha Jayawardana and Justice Prasanna Jayawardana.

The United National Party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, Tamil National Alliance, Tamil Progressive Alliance, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and All Ceylon People’s Congress are among the parties to file petitions requesting to declare the Presidential decree to dissolve parliament as illegitimate.

In addition, Election Commission member, Professor, Rathnajeevan Hoole, Center for policy alternative, Attorneys-at-law, Laksiri and Lal Wijenayake and two other individuals have filed petitions against the dissolution of parliament.

The petitions were taken for consideration this morning but it was adjourned until 2 pm allowing time for the Attorney General or his representative to appear before Court.

Later, the hearing started after the attorney general appeared before Court at 2 pm.

However, Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya making submissions before the court said that he wanted more time to make further submissions as it is a decree issued by the President.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing for tomorrow.
