The Supreme Court issued an Interim Order suspending the Gazette issued by the President to dissolve parliament until December 7 and granted leave to proceed with the FR petitions.

Accordingly, the petitions will be taken for consideration again on December 4, 5 and 6.

The Attorney general, Jayantha Jayasuriya told before the Supreme Court today that the president has dissolved parliament under the executive powers vested in him by the Constitution.

Making submissions with regard to the petitions filed against the dissolution of parliament, the Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya said the President has dissolved parliament under the powers vested in him by the Constitution.

He further said that he took into consideration the President’s advice before he submits his opinion.

Therefore the Attorney General requested the Superior Court to dismiss all petitions against the dissolution of parliament as the president has dissolved parliament in compliance with the Constitution.

The petitions are heard today for the second day before chief justice Nalin Perera, Justice Prasanna Jayawardana and Justice Priyantha Jayawardana.

Meanwhile, 17 more petitions were filed in favour of the decision by the president to dissolve parliament. Ministers, Udaya Gammanpila, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, SLPP Chairman, Emeritus Professor GL Peries, Attorney-at-law, Premanath Dolawatta and Professor Channa Jayasumana are the petitioners.
