A telephone conversation has taken place between President Maithripala Sirisena and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya with regard to the current crisis in parliament and the political situation in the country.

Attention has been drawn towards the importance of exchanging views with all parties.

However, sources at the Speakers Office said that the Speaker will not participate at today’s meeting.

The United National Front has decided to participate in the All Party Meeting which will be held at 5 PM today under the patronage of the President at the President’s Secretariat.

However, the JVP Politburo has decided that their party will not participate.

Opposition Leader R Sambanthan said that he too will be participating at the discussion.

Meanwhile, representing the ruling party, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna led by Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Democratic Leftist Front led by Minister Vasudewa Nanayakkara, National Freedom Front led by Minister Wimal Weerawansa and the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya led by Minister Udaya Gammanpila are scheduled to take part in the All-Party Meeting today.

Additionally, party sources noted that the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress led by former minister Rauff Hakeem and the All Ceylon Makkal Congress led by former minister Rishad Bathiudeen will also be taking part in the meeting today.

Issuing a communiqué, the President’s Media Division noted that the President has called this meeting in order for all the political parties to reach a consensus on ending the current political unrest and conflict situation and to allow the normal functioning of the parliament.
