President Maithripala Sirisena expressed his regret over the police water cannon and tear gas attack on a group of Bodu Bala Sena monks and their supporters in front of the Presidential Secretariat this afternoon.

In a communiqué, president Sirisena states that immediate action would be taken to conduct an investigation against those who ordered such action against the monks.

A group of monks and laymen of Bodu Bala Sena organization and the Sinhale Api Jathika Sanvidanaya staged a sit-in protest in front of the Presidential Secretariat since this morning.

The protesters demanded the release of the jailed monk, Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera.

Police fired water cannon and tear gas as the protesters blocked the traffic on Galle road.

Our correspondents stated that these monks had engaged in the protest since this morning thereby blocking the main road in front of the presidential secretariat.

Later, police fired water cannon and tear gas to disperse the protesting crowd.

However, president Sirisena invited the monks to his office later and discussed their grievances.

President’s Media unit stated that a letter with regard to the judiciary action against Galagoda Aththe Thera had been handed over to the president.
