Lahiru Madushanka who served a 3 year prison sentence in connection to a conspiracy to assassinate the former president of Maldives, Abdullah Yameen, arrived in the island at around 10:45 last night.

He returned to the country as the charges against him were dropped following a trial.

The 27 year old who was a resident of Malabe, was arrested on the 23rd of October 2015, and held in custody without trial from September 2016.

due to the lack of sufficient evidence, he was released by the Maldivian courts.

Upon assuming duties , newly elect Maldivian president, Ibrahim Mohammed, encouraged the process of Madushanka release to be accelerated.

Minister Faizer Mustapha who attended the swearing in ceremony of the new Maldivian president on behalf of the president, had discussed the case during that time.

Later, the minister obtained the support of former president Mohammed Nasheed to have him released following a meeting with Madushanka.

Lahiru Madhushanka arrived in the island yesterday accompanied by minister Faizer Mustapha.
