Speaker Karu Jayasuriya announced the members who have been appointed to the select committee when parliament commenced at 10.30 am today.

Later, the ruling party walked out of the House chamber in protest of the speaker’s decision to give the majority to the opposition in the composition of the select committee.

Several crucial meetings were held today before parliament commenced but the ruling and the Opposition parties were unable to come to a final decision with regard to the composition of the select committee.

Accordingly, the speaker announced that MPs Dinesh Gunawardana, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Wimal Weerawansa, Mahinda Samarasinghe and SB Dissanayake have been appointed from the UPFA while MPs Lakshman Kiriella, Rauff Hakeem, Rishard Badi Udin, Mano Ganeshan and Champika Ranawaka have been appointed from the UNF.

In addition, Mawai Senadhiraja and Vijitha Herath have been appointed from the Ilangai Tamil Arasu Kachchi and the JVP respectively.

However, leader of the house, Dinesh Gunawardena said that his party does not approve the speaker’s decision of appointing members to the select committee.

He said that the speaker should offer the majority membership of the select committee to the ruling party by honouring parliament traditions.

Later, MPs Lakshman Kiriella and JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake supported the speaker’s stance.

Addressing the house JVP Leader, Anura Kumara Dissanayake demanded a vote on the select committee.

Later, the speaker took steps to conduct an electronic vote in the house.

At that juncture, all government MPs started walking out of the House chamber.

Later the speaker announced that the resolution with regard to the select committee was passed in the absence of the ruling party members.

Later, parliament was adjourned to November 27.

Afterwards, the adjourning debate over the current political situation began.
