MP Ranjan Ramanayake who has been accused of contempt of court, has been ordered to appear before the supreme court on the 26th of February 2019.

This was when the case was taken up in courts regarding a statement made by him with regard to the manner in which the judge bench assigned for the case gave the verdict pertaining to the parliamentary dissolution.

Notice was issued to Ranjan Ramanayake on the 3rd of December summoning him before supreme courts today and accordingly he was present for the hearing.

Presidents counsel Faisz Musthapha, appearing on behalf of Ranjan Ramanayake noted that his client has not yet received notice from Supreme Court.

Supreme Court justices Eva Wanasundara and L.T.B. Dehideniya ordered the supreme court registrar to issue notice along with a copy of the CD containing the problematic statement to the respondent.

The judges also ordered that copy be forwarded to the attorney general as well.

Another case filed against Ranjan Ramanayake pertaining to contempt of court is currently ongoing in the Supreme court, in connection to a statement made by him in August 21st 2017, following a discussion with former premier Ranil Wickramasinghe, where he had stated to the media that majority of the supreme court judges and counsels are corrupt.

Accordingly Venerable, Magalkande Sudatta thero and retired Airforce officer, Sunil Perera had filed a complaint to the supreme court on contempt of court.

When the case was last taken up in courts on the 5th of September, the three judge bench headed by former chief justice, Priyasad Dep decided that the evidence hearing would be conducted before a five judge bench.

Accordingly the hearing is to be held on the 10th, 11th and 12th of December.
