62 persons charged for bribery and corruption cases

62 suspects were found guilty by the courts, for cases filed by the bribery and corruption investigation commission this year.

The commission for bribery and corruption noted that between 2005 and 2010 the figure stood at between 15-20 individuals per year where such defendants were proven guilty of fraud or corruption, while in 2017 57 individuals were found guilty.

48 individuals have been arrested in the process of soliciting bribes during the course of this year.

The director general of the bribery and corruption investigation commission, Sarath Jayamanne noted that individuals holding significant positions such as the presidents chief of staff, head of import and exports, chairman of state timber corporation, and the chairman of the National Livestock Development Board have all been arrested.
