Attorney-at-law Aruna Laksiri filed a fundamental petition against speaker Karu Jayasuriya this morning.

In his petition, Laksiri states that, in convening parliament, and ignoring the  Interim Injunction that had been issued against the dissolution of parliament, the speaker influenced  the hearing of the case.

Accordingly, the petitioner has requested that the Supreme Court take action against the speaker, under Clause 105/3 of the constitution for being in contempt of court.

The attorney general and the chairman of the election commission have been named as respondents in this petition.

The Supreme Court issued the interim injunction on the Gazette issued, on the 13th November by the president to dissolve parliament.

The petitioner states that the speaker convened parliament on November 14 in spite of the Supreme Court Interim Injunction.
