The hearing for the Appeal filed by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, challenging the judgment which was issued by the Court of Appeal preventing him and his cabinet of ministers from functioning in their portfolios, has commenced.

The Appeal is being heard by Supreme Court judges, Eva Wanasundera, Buwaneka Aluvihare and Vijith Malalgoda.

Meanwhile, former prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe filed a motion yesterday requesting that the hearing take place before a full bench excluding  Justice Eva Wanasundera.

Lawyers of both factions have already begun to make submissions with regard to the Appeal.

Meanwhile, Justice Eva Wanasundera has stated that has she served in public service for 39 years and today is her last day of service in the court.

A group of representatives from Mahinda’s faction filed a motion yesterday that a full bench is not necessary to hear the Appeal filed by the former president.

Accordingly, the three-judge bench rejected the motion filed by the lawyers of former Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe to appoint a full bench and decided to consider the Appeal today.
