US President Donald Trump has named Mick Mulvaney, the director of the office of management and budget, as acting White House chief of staff.

Mulvaney, 51, replaces General John Kelly, who is leaving by the end of the year.

In a tweet, President Trump described Kelly as a "great patriot", who had served the country with distinction, and added that Kelly, will stay through 2018.

However, the president did not say why Mulvaney will serve in an “acting” capacity.

Mulvaney, who served in Congress before joining the Trump administration, also served as acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau while simultaneously running the White House budget office.
