Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa was appointed as the Opposition leader of parliament today.

At the same time, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya announced MP Mahinda Amaraweera would be appointed as the Chief Whip of the Opposition.

In addition, MPs Lakshman Kiriella and Gayantha Karunathilaka were appointed as the Leader of the House and the Government’s Chief whip respectively.

Meanwhile, three UPFA MPs crossed over to the government side when parliament met at 1 pm today.

The defected MPs are MPs Vijith Vijayamuni Soyza, Lakshman Senevirathna and Indika Bandaranayake.

However, a heated situation erupted in the house as some MPs objected to the appointment of former president Rajapaksa as the opposition leader.

Addressing the house, Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said that former president Rajapaksa has already obtained SLPP membership so he cannot hold the post of opposition leader.

Later, JVP moved an adjournment debate in support of abolishing the executive presidency.
