Two minute silence observed to commemorate Tsunami victims

Remembering the victims of the 2004 Tsunami disaster, the national safety day was commemorated today.

Several programmes were organized at district level giving priority to religious observances in order to create awareness on protecting lives and property.

The national safety day commemoration was held at the Hikkaduwa- Pereliya Tsunami Memorial statue with the participation of the tri-forces and the public.

Two minutes silence, was observed at 9.25 AM in remembrance of the Tsunami victims.

A special Tsunami commemorative train left Colombo Fort Railway station for Matara today in memory of the passengers who died in the Matara bound train which was caught in the deadly waves at Pareliya 14 years ago.

On that tragic day, December 26th 2004, the ill-fated train left Colombo Fort Railway Station at 6.50 am.

In honour of the demised passengers, the special train also left the Fort Railway Station sharp at 6.50 this morning.

Later, the train stopped near the Tsunami memorial at Peraliya Railway Station for the passengers and the public to pay respect to the dead.
