The Immigration and Emigration Officers’ Union charges that immigration clearing processes at the Airport and Ports have slowed down due to administrative issues.

Its President, Aruna Kanugala stated that the issue has been resulted by subpar passport scanners that were bought spending a large sum of money.

Immigration Authorities took measures to replace passport scanners at the Airport in November.

The Immigration and Emigration Officers’ Union stated that tourists as well as Sri Lankan nationals have been gravely inconvenienced since the old scanners were replaced with new scanners.

The Union is of the opinion that a new scanner takes almost four times the time taken by an old scanner to process a passenger.

In response to an inquiry made by our news team, State Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Ashok Abeysinghe stated that he will investigate into this issue raised by Immigration officers.
