People of all faiths engaged in religious rites at their respective places of worship this morning to obtain blessings, as the New Year began.

a large number of devotees mad their way to the temple of the Sacred Tooth in Kandy before they inaugurated activities for the New Year.

in Anuradhapura large crowds visited the sacred city to pay homage to Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and the other 8 historical places of worship.

In addition devotees of the Hindu and christian faiths visited Kovils and Churches respectively.

Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena engaged in religious rites at the historical Somawathiya Sacred site and received the blessings from the chief incumbent of the temple, Pahamune Sri Sumangala Thera.

Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe commenced official duties at Temple Trees this morning, giving priority to traditional customs.

Meanwhile Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa  yesterday paid homage to the historic Kirivehera in Kataragama where he received blessings.
