President Maithripala Sirisena stated that from now on, no one cannot edit or translate the Thripitaka without the permission of the government.

The President made this statement at the ceremony held today at the historic Aluviharaya in Matale to officially declare the Thripitaka as a national heritage.

The President reminded that from now on, the Thripitaka can only be translated and edited by a panel of sufficient experts.

The Chief Prelates of the three chapters and more than 1,500 members of the Maha Sanga were present at the ceremony.

The Thripitaka contains the preaching of the Lord Buddha, and is in three volumes as Suthra, Vinaya and Abhidharma.

As an outcome of the visit by Arahath Mahinda Thera, taken place in 3rd century B.C, Sri Lanka was blessed with the Thripitaka.

For the first time, the Thripitaka was written on Ola leaves at Aluviharaya Temple, Matale in 1st Century of B.C. during King Walagamba’s time.

A commemorative stamp was also issued marking the declaration of the Thripitaka as a national heritage.

Anunayake Thera of the Malwathu Chapter, Dr., Most Venerable, Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera, Chief Prelate of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya, Most Venerable Kotugoda Dhammawasa Thera as well as Anu Nayake Thera of the Sri Lanka Ramagngna Maha Nikaya, Venerable Matale Dhammakusala Thera addressed the ceremony.

Subsequently speaking, President Maithripala Sirisena stated that he will intervene in declaring the Thripitaka as a world heritage as well.
