The new eco friendly city which was constructed to replace the old Laggala town that had submerged in the Moragahakanda Kaluganga reservoir was declared open by President Maithripala Sirisena this morning.

President Sirisena ceremonially opened the gate to the new city and unveiled the memorial plaque set up in the middle of the town, marking the beginning of a new era of economic and cultural awakening in the country.

The city was constructed for the Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga multi-purpose irrigation project.

Government buildings established in the new town will be opened by the respective Ministers.

The new city was constructed under the Moragahakanda-Kalu Ganga project to fulfill the needs of former residents of the old city..

More than 3000 families from 25 Grama Sevaka divisions have been accommodated in the new city where an investment of 4.5 billion rupees was required for completion of the project.

The entire town, spanning over 75 acres, comprises of a new Police Station, a Unit Management Office, A cooperative Building Complex, a Pradeshiya Sabha building, a Divisional Secretariat, a peoples fair and a public market complex.

The new city also has a bus stand and a Post Office, as well as 26 state institutions including banks and financial institutions
