185 years jail term on two former LTTE cadres for murdering 37 security personnel

Two former LTTE members who were found guilty of downing an aircraft by firing missiles and murdering 37 security personnel were sentenced to 185 years rigorous imprisonment.

The sentence was passed by the North Central Provincial High Court Judge, Mahesh Weeraman today.

The judge who passed 5-year sentences on the two convicts for each count of 37 charges ordered to parole them after serving five years of the 185-year sentence.

The two convicts shot missiles from a hideout in Wilpattu jungle and downed the Antonov-32 on its way from Palaly to Ratmalana on March 20th, in the year 2000.

The two convicts, Irasathurai Jegan aka Pulavan of Jaffna and Nallam Sivalingam aka Sinnathilakan, both were attached to the Missile Unit of the LTTE at the time of the attack.

All 37 passengers including 36 security personnel and the Russian pilot were pronounced dead in the attack.
