According to the draft constitution presented to the Constitutional Assembly yesterday, Sri Lanka is identified as a unitary state as well as “Oru Miththa Naadu”.

It stated that Buddhism should be given priority while rights of all religions should be safeguarded.

As per the proposal, the President will be appointed through a vote in Parliament while he should not be part of parliament.

A citizen who receives a vote exceeding half of the total number of Parliamentarians will thus be appointed as the President.

The President of the country will be prohibited from holding any political party positions while he or she can only be removed only through an impeachment passed with a two thirds majority in Parliament.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has been empowered and will be the person who commands a majority in parliament.

The Prime Minister will also act as the Head of the Cabinet of Ministers.

The composition of Parliament is also proposed to be changed by introducing a lower house with 55 Members.
