Opposition asks for an emergency to combat Fall Armyworms

The PHI’s Union of Sri Lanka stated that there is risk of facing long term health concerns by consuming maize infested with Fall Armyworms.

The Union stated that legal action will be taken against individuals who sell maize infested with fall armyworms for human consumption.

The PHI’s Union of Sri Lanka further stated that island wide raids are being carried out in this regard.

Meanwhile, a stock of maize infested with fall armyworm, was found today from the Weekly Fair in Balangoda.

Crops of maize infested with fall armyworms were discovered from multiple locations in the island over the past few days.

However, speaking at a ceremony in Kirinda – Matara today, former Minister of Agriculture, MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena stated that an emergency should be declared to combat Fall Armyworms.   

He further stated that the present government does not have a proper mechanism to address this concern.
