Maze farmers demand compensation for crop damage by Army worm

Farmers have requested that the government compensate them losses incurred following the destruction of maize crops by Army Worms.

Approximately  50 thousand hectares of maize have been destroyed by the pest.

the menace has spread to other areas of the island and it is believed that it will  attack other varieties of  crops.

Earlier, the Public health inspectors union urged the general public to not consume maize that had been infested with Army Worms.

 As a consequence of this warning, retailers have also been impacted.

Farmers have requested that the government pay compensation, of 25 thousand rupees for every acre of crops that was damaged.

Meanwhile, the minister of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs, Livestock Development, Irrigation, fisheries and aquatic resources P Harrison expressed these views on the matter at a media conference in Colombo this morning.
