The department of Agriculture has stated that they suspect that the “Fall -  Armyworm” may have been introduced to the  country last September.

Assistant Director Sanath M. Bandara at the Gannoruwa National Agriculture Information and Communication Centre, made the statement at a media briefing in Kandy yesterday.

However,  the All  Island Agrarian Federation Secretary P. B. Sarath charged that the pest had been introduced  from America.

A discussion is scheduled to be held today with President Maithripala Sirisena at the chair, to look at how to eradicate the pest population and provide compensation to those negatively impacted.

The ministerial committee appointed for the probe along with several officials from the department of agriculture are too expected to participate in the discussion.
