Cabinet has approved to allocate 250 million rupees to compensate farmers who are affected by the fall army worm infestation.

Minister daya gamage stated that he issue was discussed extensively at the cabinet meeting.

The director general of agriculture, Dr. Wijesiri Weerakoon says that there have been several incidents reported on the fall army worm infesting paddy cultivations.

The director general said that preliminary reports noted that paddy cultivations in Dehiaththakandiya have been infested and the situation had been contained with the involvement of the department of agriculture.

The caterpillar which initially destroyed maize cultivations, has now been discovered in tomato, Kurakkan and apala plants.

The department of agriculture suspected the infestation would spread to other crops during the maize harvesting period.

Meanwhile, the department of export agriculture has requested that farmers be vigilant of reports on the caterpillar being found in ginger cultivations which is an export crop.

The Director General of the department A.P Heenkenda noted that immediately after the ginger has been harvested, the plants should be completely destroyed.

Meanwhile, a tipper which was transporting an infected stock of maize has been seized by police.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the stock, which had been removed from Polonnaruwa – Elehera- Bakamoona and Girithale was to be transported to a farm in Matale.

The mayor of Dambulla municipal council, Jaliya Opaatha had advised that the stock of maize be destroyed immediately.
