Information has been received that the two main suspects accused of destroying Buddhist statues in and around Mawanella area are hiding in the Balangoda area.

It has also been revealed that they are brothers.

The police stated that a special operation has been launched to arrest the absconding suspects.

Earlier, explosives, an air rifle, and other equipment were found at the residence of the suspects’ father, after he was arrested and taken in for questioning.

A document with a name list was also found at the location which mentioned the names of 13 individuals, including the 7 individuals who were arrested in connection with the incident.

A senior police officer noted the two suspects are residents of the Mawanella- Higula area, and they belong to an extremist religious group.

Meanwhile a Buddhist statue that was destroyed in the Randiwela area in Mawanella- was replaced with a new statue today by the residents.

This incident was a topic of discussion in parliament today.
