The MoU between estate workers and owners was to be signed today, however the workers have not agreed to the proposal that was agreed upon by the estate employers and the government.

As a consequence,  the thousand rupee campaign instigated a demonstration a in front of the office of the Estate Owners Association o in Rajagiriya.

The trade unions are complaining regarding the mechanism of the already announced collective agreement, stating that it is not accurate.

They are pointing out that the estate owners have tried to convince them that the estate labour wage has been increased, by adding the attendance, production allowance and EPF to the wage.

Secretary of the labour union collective, S. Ramanadan stated that they would not participate in any future discussions.

Meanwhile, island wide protests are being carried out by estate workers specifically inHatton, Bogawantalawa, Badulla, Kandy and Rajagiriya.

The labourers are demanding that the authorities increase their daily wage up to one thousand rupees.

Hatton Nuwara Eliya road has been closed off at Malliappu junction, as a consequence of one such  protest.

State Minister of Plantation, Wadiwail Suresh stated that a final decision will be taken after todays discussions.
