Seven treasure hunters were arrested as they were engaging in illegal mining activities at Parakum Mawatha in Ethili-wewa Wellawaya yesterday.

One of the seven, is a member of the UNP from Haali Ella Pradeshiya Sabah

Equipment used for mining was seized from the mining spot at the time of arrest.

The suspects are aged between 25 and 63 year s of age, were from Hali Ela, Buttala and Wellawaya.

Meanwhile, Department of Archaeology states that those who are found guilty of violating the Archaeological Ordinance will be subject to increased fines and more severe punishments.

Archaeological Director General Professor, P.B Mandawala told our news team that fines for such violations had not been updated in 14 years.
