A new collective agreement to increase the daily wage of estate workers was signed under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees today.

Representatives from the Estate Owners Association and Estate Workers collective were also present at the event.

Under the new collective agreement, the daily basic wage of an estate worker will be increased up to 700 rupees.

Another 40 rupees for an additional per kilogram of tea leaves and 50 rupees, depending on the fluctuation of tea prices, will also be added to the daily wage.

At the same time, the estate owners have pledge to pay arrears wage for three months under this new collective agreement which will be in force for two years.

However, some estate workers protested in several parts of the country including Hatton, Bogawantalawa, Badulla, Kandy and Rajagiriya against the new agreement.
